From Migoti Mountain to Sussex: A Coffee Journey
In early 2024, our founders, Alice and Chris, journeyed to Migoti Mountain in Burundi—where they met with local farmers, hiked the steep red-soil trails, and tasted this exceptional coffee right at its source. So impressed by its potential, they reserved the lot months before the harvest had even finished.
That decision marked the beginning of an unforgettable journey: from remote highland farms to the Migoti Washing Station, through washed-out roads, export delays, and international shipping setbacks. Eight months later, the coffee finally arrived at our Sussex roastery. Imported directly from Migoti Coffee Company, this is more than a sourcing story—it’s a relationship grounded in trust, shared values, and a dedication to quality from seed to cup.
New for 2026: An Edge Exclusive
For 2026, Migoti PB is available exclusively through Edgcumbes. We have secured all 1,200kg of Migoti's 2026 peaberry production, making this rare lot one of our most limited and exciting coffees to date. As the only roastery offering this coffee, we're proud to bring this exceptional Burundi peaberry directly to our customers.
A Small Country with Big Coffee
Burundi may be one of East Africa’s smallest coffee-producing nations, but it's rich in the conditions that make truly exceptional coffee. With elevations ranging from 1,500 to 2,000 metres, heirloom Bourbon varietals, generous rainfall, and over 800,000 smallholder families—each cultivating just 150–200 trees—Burundi’s coffee landscape is both humble and extraordinary.
The Bourbon Advantage
Today, Arabica represents nearly 100% of Burundi’s national coffee output. Grown at high altitudes, the Bourbon variety from this region is renowned for its sweetness, bright acidity, full body, and distinctive notes of florals, citrus, spice, and wild complexity.
What's in a Name?
"Migoti" is named after an indigenous tree species native to the area—and also the mountain where the Migoti team established their very first washing station.
Farming with Community and Purpose
The coffee trees on Migoti Mountain are owned by the local farming community. Cherries are harvested by hand and delivered daily to the washing station, where quality and traceability are paramount. These carefully processed lots consistently earn high cupping scores—making Migoti one of the most respected names in Burundi’s specialty coffee scene.
Art Inspired by Burundi
Each year, the team at Migoti commissions a local Burundian artist to create an original piece of artwork that reflects life in Burundi—whether inspired by coffee, wildlife, culture, or the people behind the harvest.
For 2026, Migoti commissioned a striking portrait by Odran Iteriteka, an artist known for creating detailed works entirely in biro pen. The portrait depicts a coffee farmer—not one individual in particular, but a figure representing the many farming families who supply cherries to Migoti throughout the harvest season.
The artwork's distinctive blue tones are a direct reflection of Odran's chosen medium. Our role is then to translate this original artwork into a design that can be screen printed onto the coffee sacks, creating a unique visual connection between the coffee, the community, and the people who produce it.
Try our Migoti PB and let us know what you taste—we think you'll find the journey was worth every mile.
